Throw Your Net on the Right Side

Scripture: And He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” – John 21:6

Have you ever felt like you were trying everything, but nothing seemed to work? The disciples had fished all night. These were skilled and experienced fishermen, but their nets were empty. Then Jesus gave a simple instruction: Throw your net on the right side.”

The net is more than just a fishing tool in this story; it represents your efforts, your faith, and your willingness to trust God with what you have. The disciples had cast their nets over and over, all night long, with nothing to show for it. Though, they were skilled fishermen, their knowledge, strength and persistence produced nothing.

Then Jesus gave a simple, unusual instruction: “Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some" John 21:6

The right side isn't just a direction; it is about divine alignment. It is the place where you hear God's voice, trust His timing and obey His word, even when it is not logical. hearing and obeying His direction, even when it does not make sense. When the disciples obeyed the instruction that Jesus had given them, their effort, which seemed fruitless, became productive to the extent that they were not able to draw the net because of the multitude of fish.

When the disciples obeyed, everything shifted; their empty, fruitless effort became a supernatural harvest, so great that their nets were bursting and they struggled to bring it in. What was one barren turned into Abundance.

Sometimes, your breakthrough doesn't require a different sea, a different boat or even a new net. It simply requires obedience to shift to the "right side" the place where God has already commanded the blessing. Remember His voice upon the waters, Psalms 29

The right side represents:

  • Obedience – Doing what God says even when it doesn’t make sense.

  • Kingdom Alignment – Being positioned in His timing, His will, and His plan.

  • Faith – Trusting His Word more than our experience or logic.

  • Favour – The place where God commands provision and breakthrough.

Obedience often feels small, but it unlocks the exceedingly, abundantly above all (Ephesians 3:20). Your breakthrough isnt about doing more—its about doing what He says.

Scriptures for Meditation

John 21:6, Isaiah 1: 19, Ephesians 3:20

Reflection Questions:

1. What nets” (efforts, dreams, prayers) have you been casting without results?

2. Is there an area where God is asking you to realign or obey differently?

3. How can you posture yourself to hear His voice and respond quickly?

4 Could God be calling you to shift, not your effort, but your direction to listen more closely for His voice and obey?

5 What might the "Right Side" look like for you today? (A change in approach, a word of obedience, a step of faith)?

Prayer:

Lord, I bring You my empty nets. Forgive me for striving in my own strength. Teach me to hear Your voice and obey without hesitation. I trust You to turn frustration into overflow, emptiness into abundance, and lack into exceedingly, abundantly above all.” I throw my net again, in obedience, and I wait for Your breakthrough. In Jesusname, Amen.
